Higbee Beach

Cape May, NJ

This stretch of beach on the bay side of Cape May is one of the most beautiful beaches there, and well worth the extra effort it takes to see it. The dunes, trees, and brush here have been preserved to provide a habitat for birds. It is easy to imagine Captain Kidd or Blackbeard burying treasure there in the dead of the night.
The ghosts at Higbee Beach aren't pirates, though. Some say the ghost is Mr. Higbee, other legends claim the ghost is Higbee's slave, who kept a vigil at his grave after his master's death. I have read an account of one woman who actually saw the spirit of an old man on the beach. It is an eerie, desolate feeling place, especially in autumn.
