| Plaque Marking Scaffold Site |
This was the site of the executions of a few "lucky" prisoners, who were executed
here, within the precincts of the Tower, to spare them and the government the embarrassment
of a public execution. The plaque that marks the scaffold site lists the "lucky" prisoners:
|
William, Lord Hastings, by order of Richard, duke of Gloucester, in June 1483 |
|
Queen Ann Boleyn, 2nd wife of Henry VIII, May 19, 1536 |
|
Margaret, Countess of Salisbury, the last of the Plantagenet family, May 27, 1541 |
|
Queen Catherine Howard, 5th wife of Henry VIII, February 13, 1542 |
|
Jane, Viscountess Rochford, February 13, 1542 |
|
Lady Jane Grey, wife of Guilford Dudley, February 12, 1554 |
| Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, February 25, 1601 |
Of these, the bloodiest execution and subsequent haunting was that of Margaret, the Countess of Salisbury. She was
70 years old when she was executed for political reasons. She refused to put her head on the block, stating that she was no
traitor. When the executioner approached her, she ran. He gave chase, hacking at her with the axe. Her ghost has been seen
reliving this horrible act.
In addition to the countess, the shadow of a large axe has been seen to fall across the old site of the block.
