Santa Susana Pass Road/Spahn Ranch
Chatsworth, CA
The Santa Susana Pass Road was originally an old stagecoach route to Los Angeles.
The Spahn Ranch is located off Santa Susana Pass Road west of Topanga Canyon Road.
This ranch gets its name
from George Spahn, who purchased the ranch in 1948. The ranch is also known as
"Spahn's Movie Ranch" from the days when it was used to film westerns, including
Duel in the Sun and episodes of Bonanza and The Lone Ranger.
The ghosts associated with this site are not from this productive time in the history of
the ranch.
In the late 1960's the popularity of westerns waned and the ranch was abandoned. In the
spring of 1968, Charles Manson and his "family" found the abandoned movie sets and moved in.
Spahn Ranch was, at this time, the site of at least one murder. When one of the ranch hands,
Donald "Shorty" Shea tried to evict Manson and his family from the rance, he was murdered and
decapitated, then buried on the property.
In 1970, the ranch buildings were burned up in a widlfire. This has not exorcised the evil! The
whole area has a strange feeling to it, which has not been erased even by the presence of the
current occupants. (a church) Many people driving down the road at night have reported seeing
a headless man on the rocks above the road.
Directions: Off the 118, exit "Topanga Canyon Blvd" and go south (the only way you can go)
.Drive to "Santa Susana Pass Road" and go right (West). Drive about 1/8 - 1/3 mile on
Santa Susana Pass Road. Look for the parking lot access road on the right which leads up
to, of course, the parking lot. It is a two lane road, about 200 feet in length, and has a
chain link fence running along side it. Directly across the street (from this parking lot
road) is the Spahn Ranch, the part where the little western town stood.
Note:The entrance to this site is now private property. I believe it is owned
by a church. Please do not trespass!
