The Biltmore Hotel

Los Angeles, CA

The ghost that haunts this hotel is believed to be that of the tragic victim of a vicious homicide. In life she was known as Elizabeth Short. The fame that she sought in life eluded her until her violent death. She gained fame as The Black Dahlia, victim of an unsolved murder.

She was last seen in the lobby of this hotel, making phone calls. Red Manley, her escort that evening , and the hotel employees were the last known people to see her alive. Six days later, on January 15, 1947,her body was discovered in a vacant lot. The police investigators felt that she was posed in a seductive way. Her face had been slashed so that her smile extended to her ears. The worst was that she had been neatly cut in two right above her waist.

Although her body has been committed to the ground, her fate to infamy and her story to many crime shows, her ghost has returned to the last place she was seen alive - The Biltmore. Staff and guests have reported seeing a woman in a black dress pacing the lobby and waiting by the phones. She is always described as seeming to be upset about something. On occasion she has walked into the elevator with other passengers. To my knowledge, noone has asked her what she is looking for. Perhaps her sister, who she said was staying at the Biltmore. Maybe she is waiting for a ride.
