Midnight Mary

Bordentown Road

What is the REAL STORY of Midnight Mary? Read all about it in the upcoming book, "Supernatural Pennsylvania" due for release Spring 2010.

She has been spotted walking across manor lake in her wet prom gown. She has been seen hitchhiking along Bordentown Road. She is said to be the revenant of Gertrude Spring, who died in a car accident on the way to her prom in 1935 on the Bristol Pike. According to legend, the car veered off the road and into the lake, drowning "Mary" and her date. His body was recovered, but hers was never found. The problem with the legend is that there is a headstone for "Gertrude Spring" from 1935 in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery on Cedar Street in Bristol! Is her body there, or is this just a marker? Why is the spirit called "Mary" when the girl in question was named Gertrude? Time and legend have obscured the true facts of this story, but sightings continue to be reported. A sighting was reported to us last year, in fact. If I ever see her, I am stopping. I want to ask her who she is!

Reported on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 12:43 PM, by Shark428P:
Back in the warmer months of 1992, a friend Bill and I went out to Penn Warner Lake on Bordentown Road to see the famous Midnight Mary. We parked his car up in the parking lot right near the dock to Manor Lake and walked out to the bridge that joins the two lakes. While on the bridge looking towards Manor Lake, we heard ballroom style music coming from behind us. When we turned around, Mary was dancing on Penn Warner Lake! She was wearing a pink gown and was soaking wet! We walked across Bordentown Rd to get a closer look. I started to get spooked and begged Bill to leave! He told me no! He wanted to see this! At that time, as if she had heard us or saw us, she turned around and started heading toward s us! I got really scared and ran for the car! I jumped in the car and started to take off towards Tullytown. Bill jumped in the window of the passenger side of the car as I slowed down to let him in. He told me when I ran, she kept walking towards him until she got about 3-5 feet away and disappeared.
Another account of Mary happened when I was working at a pipe coating factory in the USX industrial park off New Ford Mill Rd in the summer of 1991. A truck driver who had a scheduled pickup at my plant came speeding down the road! He turned into the driveway and stopped just inches from the gate. When I went out to see what was going on, he told me he had to use the phone, it was an emergency! As he was dialing the emergency number which at the time was the old, pre 911 days of 215-945-3100, he was explaining his story to me! He said he picked a girl up hitch hiking on Bordentown Rd. She was wet and kept saying she had to find Bobby! While he was driving, he was doing his best to sooth her and when he turned around, she was gone! All that was left was a puddle of water in the seat and her cursauge left laying on the console of the cab. I reached over and pressed the cradle on the phone and told him there was no sense calling the police! I could explain and told him he just met our local legend! The water will dry, the flowers will disappear, and you'll have a great story to tell the folks back home. I went to the cab about 10 minutes later to see the flowers but they were already gone! The puddle of water was still visible on the seat however. He slept in my guard station that night being too spooked to sleep in the rig and in the morning, got what he needed and left never mentioning what had happened the night before!
