Jennie Wade House

Gettysburg, PA

Jennie Wade was the only civilian killed at the battle of Gettysburg. She was making bread dough at her table in the kitchen when a bullet went through the door of the house and hit Jennie Wade as she was preparing the dough.

More shots were fired. Union soldiers, who heard screaming from the house and fearing for the lives of the surviving inhabitants of the house, attempted to move the occupants into the basement. Mrs. Wade refused to leave without Jennie. The soldiers wrapped Jennie's body in a quilt and carried her to the basement.

Basement Display

Since the house has been opened as an attraction, many visitors have reported cold spots in the basement, unexplained icy breezes upstairs, and the chains across displays swinging when no outside force was applied.
I experienced all of these phenomena during my initial visit to the house as part of an investigation during the IGHS conference 2000. Subsequent visits during regular tours were not as fruitful, but I do feel that there is an active presence in the house, as evidenced in these photographs.
