This photo was shot in 1919 but was not published until 1975 by a retired RAF officer, Sir Victor Goddard. The group in the picture is Goddard's squadron, which had served on the HMS Daedalus during World War I.
Behind the men in the top row, fourth from the left, there appeared to be an extra face. The face was recognized by the other men in the squadron as that of Freddy Jackson, an air mechanic who had been killed in an accident two days earlier. His funeral wwas the day the photo was taken.
