Blood Alley
This alley is called, appropriately, Blood Alley!
According to local legend, the sounds of a drum can be heard here. Oddly, as we entered the alley, before I heard the story, I stopped walking twice because I was certain that I heard footsteps behind us. Perhaps it was my imagination, or perhaps it was the drummer!
The ghost of the drummer is said to walk under the alleyway. The ghostly drumming is an echo of the past, when a small boy was sent into a dark cavern by the bay to search for treasure. Apparently, he feels compelled to continue his search into eternity.
The story is this: Sometime in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, two sailors noticed a tiny opening in the rocky shoreline during low tide. The hole was too small for them to get into, but they said that it appeared to be manmade.
One of the sailors thought of hiring a young boy to climb into the opening during low tide carrying a drum. The boy would then walk, beating the drum rhythmically, until he located the treasure they were certain was hidden inside. The sailors would follow above ground, following the sound of the drumbeat. When the boy located the treasure, he was to stop walking and begin beating the drum very quickly. At that point the sailors would dig down to the treasure from above.
All went well, and the sailors followed the sound of the boy's drum. When they got to the area where the alley is, the drum suddenly stopped. They waited for some time and no sound was heard. The y began to trace the route back to the opening, noting that the tide was beginning to rise. They waited as the tide rose, with no sound from or sign of the little boy. They watched with dismay and growing horror as the opening filled with water, trapping the boy inside That was the end of the legend. We did not learn what happened to the sailors or if the boy was ever seen again.
It is interesting that this story takes place in an opening that fills with water during high tide. if this cavern does exist, this drumming sound could be some natural occurence due to the water filling a cavern underneath the street.
The story could also be a colonial "urban legend", used to warn young children away from sailors, the waterfront, and dark alleyways at night!
