St. Mary's Church
Derby, England
St.Mary's was built when the area experienced a large influx of Irish immigrants in 1840.
St. Mary's was the first Catholic Church designed by the architect Augustus Pugin, and it is considered
his best work.
The ghost of a priest has been spotted on the right side of the church.
A newly arrived priest was descending the staircase with three other priests. As they entered the main church, the new priest remarked that he was
unaware that there were to be four other priests there that day. The three priests that had accompanied him looked at him in confusion. They assured him that
he was mistaken, as there were three of them and he made four. The new priest looked utterly shocked as he proceeded to
inform them that while they were upstairs at their meeting and had been joined by an older, gray-haired priest.
A priest meeting this same description has been seen on several occasions since that time. The people that see him never realize at the time that they are seeing a ghost.
They, like the new priest above, only discover that they have had a brush with the supernatural when they remark on the presence of this priest. So it is entirely possible that he has been
seen by even more people than we will ever know, as many witnesses doubtless assume they are seeing a flesh and blood person, not a spirit!
